glen you are wrong the smoking ban is an infringement of human rights the last time i checked smoking was legal and the buying of cigarettes was legal my wife and i spent 11 years building our trade after fighting drug dealers and bad elements our trade was 80%smokers as our staff are we earned the right to run this pub the way my wife and self and my more importantly my customers wanted a lot of my custom is older people and yes a lot fought in various wars for our freedoms try telling them they only fought for freedoms to suit the bigots who have nothing better to do but to pick and choose which freedom does not suit there twisted view of how we should live

Jon, statistical analysis (which is all epidimiological studies are) never, ever EVER result in conclusive proof. I'm scientifically trained and know what conclusive proof looks like. Despite 40 years of research and billions od pounds spent the anti smoking movement has yet to meet the minimum criteria to demonstrate causation between SHS and illness let alone get anywhere near proof. You have fallen victim to the spin. Even using the "accepted" figures, SHS represents less of a health risk to bar workers than the drive to and from work. A total ban is not needed, makes little sense in some places (why does it cover smoking shelters, who exactly works in a smoking shelter) and the evidence that it's based on is falling apart under increasing scrutiny. Glenn, Were are getting on with it and pushing business, its just a shame that the torrents of non smokers who, according to "reseach", would come flocking haven't. People dont want to come out now. Simple. Doesnt matter if you sell booze at supermarket prices. The will still stay at home with their Beers & fags with friends round and have the same atmosphere they enjoyed in the pub. It'll be nice and warm in Spain when you're smoking outside when they too introduce a smoking ban. Also the use of the word "Nazi"? Doesn't that demean what was acheived by our for fathers - they didn't fight agianst legislation bought in by a government voted in by a democracy (I know only about 40% of the voters voted for the government but it's the system we have) they fought against racsists, bigots and stood up for far more important priciples than non smoking and no it does not contrivine your human rights! We should all move our business' forward in a sensible modern and probably increasing diverse way and face up to the challenges in front of us. (Like we did with the breatherliser). Get over it!

The Labour Manifesto 2005 promised that pubs not serving food would be allowed the choice of allowing smoking or not. We voted based on this and they lied. Don't vote Labour in your next election.

If the anti smoking facists like fresh air so much I suggest the Governnment reverse their unpopular smoking ban and sling the non smokers out into the fresh air and cold weather and see if they like being discriminated against. Traffic polution is far worse then any cigarette smoke.

SHS doesn't appear on death certificates just like falling out of trees doesn't or being hit by trains. The debate is over, SHS kills and now steps have been taken to prevent these deaths. Sorry to hear your moving to spain, if i had the money i would do exactly that myself.I hate this country, i am fed up with being told i carnt do that carnt do this, but i urge every smoker and tolerant non smoker who disagrees with this smoking ban to write to gordon brown and tell him exactly what you think of this smoking ban in no uncertain terms. If lanour thinks they are going to win the next election then they are living in world coo coo land.They have managed in the last ten years to turn this ONCE GREAT COUNTRY into a nanny state.What makes me laugh its the tax payers money paying them to dictate all this crap to us all.Its about time we all stood together and showed this hypocritical governement that we oppose being told we cannot smoke a perfectly legal substance inside.This government has ruined this country and i hope that when they are bannished from office they will never return again ever.They pick on smokers because they havent got the balls of intelligence to tackle the real problems of this country to name just a few ever increasing immigration and MRSA in our hospitals. Given the fact there is conclusive proof that SHS causes death and disease in non-smokers, you'd think that the 5 mins outside would be a mere trifle compared to barstaff suffering a long painful death from cancer! That these 'rebel landlords' are now selling up, can we assume they never intended to 'fight the ban' as was much vaunted? I am one of those people that Jack seems to overlook. As a 40+ year-long customer of public houses I find that my health has not benefited from the cold, mist, wind or rain when partaking of a legal activity in a permited area. This Government failed to accomodate the needs or listen to the wishes of a quarter of its population. It encouraged extremist opinion to be promoted as fact created hatred & exclusion, destroyed community & camaraderie all simply because of the incompetence of their own anti-smoking education group ASH. Countries like Spain have already suffered under dictatorial rule and benefit from a far truer democracy than we can ever look forward to. Sorry jack your wrong the ban benefits no one but the biggots,in my area their are 7 pubs 3 do meals and smoking has for many ayear has been smoke free {as i think would be the same all over }apart from the bar you can, eat with no smoke to put you off every body happy, the other 4 pubs do not do food smoking was allowed now the point is you had a choice smoke free or smoking now 15 million people have no choice acceped your way ,this in a so called free country cannot be right germany banned smoking but have now recinded it why ,other countrys have part smoking why because its fair you have a choice

Why sell up and go? The law benefits everyone! Its there to improve everyones health. its ridiculous that people are opposing the ban, pubs are public places! i agree totally with the ban.

Soon there will be more Brits living in Spain than Spanish, just like there will be more foreigners living in Britain and Britains.

well done for standing up to this extremism, the government only had to make an inside smoking area legitimate and there would have been no problem. i have just changed 3 of my patio heater bulbs £20 each! i could have spent the £5k smoking area costs on converting part of my pub for smoking, at least then the 95% of my customers who do smoke and whose money pays the bills here would not have to stand outside in the freezing cold, with me paying £1200 per month to heat the inside of the pub!
