New Inn wins children's menu accolade

7 February, 2008

Herefordshire pub achieves Catered4thekids accreditiation

A focus on fresh food and local sourcing has helped a Herefordshire pub become the first to win Catered4thekids accreditation.

The New Inn pub in St Owen’s Cross was given the stamp of approval after being assessed against the 12 criteria which make up the standard.

These include homemade burgers with a minimum of 80 per cent meat, a 20 per cent cap on deep fried main meals, the choice of vegetables with main meals and sugar free fruit drinks.

The New Inn, run by Nigel and Tee Maud on a lease with Marston’s Pub Company, offers a menu built around produce sourced from suppliers in the county. The pub is a finalist in the Food Pub category of The Publican Awards 2008.

Nigel said: "We were delighted to be assessed and awarded the Catered4thekids award, especially as we were the first to go through the process."

He added that the pub’s established children’s menu had been a good fit with the Catered4thekids criteria, without requiring wholesale changes. "This was part of our ongoing look at food for kids in trying to educate them."

While one group of customers had moved on when they discovered there were no chicken nuggets on the menu, the majority have responded very positively to the New inn’s approach.

"It’s all about enabling parents to make an informed choice about the food their children eat," said Nigel.
