Pubs outgrow fast food sector

26 November, 2009

Key Note report shows that pubs account for a third of eating-out market

So many pubs offer food now that they have overtaken fast food as the biggest sector in the eating-out market.

According to market analysts Key Note pubs now account for 35 per cent of the sector.

Overall in 2008 British consumers spent £13.65bn on eating out last year – down 0.7 per cent on 2007. The figure is expected to drop again for 2009 but, according to Key Note, will begin to rise in 2010.

The Restaurants Report states: “Spending was down 0.7 per cent on 2007 as the `credit crunch recession' hit leisure markets, and the market is predicted to contract further during 2009.

“An underlying demand for eating out is still increasing, however, and Key Note predicts the restoration of growth from 2010 onwards. Positive factors include: busier lifestyles — reduced time for cooking meals at home; and the interest in cuisine inspired by television programmes and celebrity chefs.”
