Have your say on government's live music plans

10 March, 2010

Licensees have until March 26 to respond to DCMS consultation

Licensees have just over two weeks to respond to a government consultation on plans to offer exemptions for small gigs.

The Department for Culture Media and Sport is proposing that live music events that attract 100 people or fewer should not need a licence.

However politicians, campaigners, the Musicians' Union, and The Publican – through the campaign Listen Up! – are calling for the government to go further and set the exemption at 200.

Many feel the Licensing Act has had a negative impact on live music in pubs, with licensees faced with a host of regulations and extra costs.

Liberal Democrat peer Lord Clement-Jones has tabled a private members bill on the issue, which is due to have its second reading in the House of Commons this Friday.
